The Guide
Which Tour, What the Ticket Covers, and How the Day Runs
A long day from the Red Sea resorts, a half day from a Luxor hotel, or both banks of the Nile in one go. Here is what each tour includes, which tombs the standard ticket opens, and what the extra tombs cost.
A Valley of the Kings tour takes you to the royal burial valley on the West Bank of the Nile opposite Luxor, where the standard ticket opens three of the tombs open that day, and most tours add the Temple of Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon. From the Red Sea resorts it is a full day of about 290 km of road each way; from a Luxor hotel it is a morning. The tour we would book from Hurghada is Ranco Travel’s small-group day, with the entry tickets and Tutankhamun’s tomb included, rated 4.9 from 2,926 reviews and from $93 a person in current promotion (usually $98) (checked October 2026).

What the ticket covers
The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities sells the Valley of the Kings ticket at the gate, and the dearest tombs need their own:
| Ticket | Foreign adult | Foreign student |
|---|---|---|
| Valley of the Kings | EGP 750 | EGP 375 |
| Tomb of Tutankhamun (KV62) | EGP 700 | EGP 350 |
| Tombs of Ramesses V and VI (KV9) | EGP 220 | EGP 110 |
| Tomb of Seti I (KV17) | EGP 2,000 | EGP 2,000 |
| Temple of Hatshepsut | EGP 440 | EGP 220 |
Ticket prices from the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities’ price list (November 2024 edition) and its monument pages, read in October 2026; all open from 06:00 to 17:00 every day.
The Valley of the Kings ticket itself admits you to three tombs from those open that day, as the tour listings put it; which ones are open changes from season to season. Over sixty tombs have been found in the valley, and only some of them are open at any time. A tour’s price either includes the tickets or leaves them to you at the gate: on the Luxor half days the lowest price is usually without them.
A tour or the ticket on your own?
On your own you pay the gate prices above and a taxi or a driver across the river, and you read the tombs yourself. It is the cheapest way if you are staying in Luxor and have read up.
On a tour you get the transport, the tickets if you choose that option, and an Egyptologist who explains each tomb at its entrance before you go in. From the Red Sea resorts a tour is the only practical way: hotel pickup, the four-hour drive and back, and the sites in between. Valley of the Kings tickets goes through every ticket and pass.

From Hurghada and the Red Sea
The day trips pick up between about 3:30 and 6 am, depending on the tour and the resort, and drive 4 to 4.5 hours each way, with a rest stop on the desert road; we measured the road from Hurghada to Luxor at 289 km. A typical day is Karnak, lunch, the Colossi of Memnon, the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut’s temple, and most add a stop at an alabaster workshop. Guests’ complaints are about the hours on the road and the extras sold on the day, such as a Nile boat ride or another tomb: check what your option includes before you go. Valley of the Kings from Hurghada compares the day trips.
From Luxor
From a hotel on the East Bank, a West Bank half day takes about five hours with lunch; a full day adds Karnak and Luxor Temple. On some tours, guests staying on the West Bank are met at a meeting point there rather than collected. Valley of the Kings tours from Luxor sets the half days, the full days and the private tours side by side.
From Cairo
A day by air is possible: Nice Tours’ private day flies you from Cairo to Luxor and back, with the West Bank, Karnak and Luxor Temple in between and the entrance fees included, from $436 a person (checked October 2026). It is about 15 hours door to door.
Crossing the Nile
The valley is on the West Bank, Luxor’s city and most hotels on the East Bank. Tours drive over the road bridge south of the city or cross by boat; independent visitors take the local ferry across from the East Bank and a taxi on the other side. The valley lies in the hills behind the cultivated fields, past the Colossi of Memnon and the temples.
Which tombs to see
The tombs open on the standard ticket rotate, so your three are chosen on the day from those open. The extra tickets are for Tutankhamun’s small but famous tomb, the long painted corridors of Ramesses V and VI, and Seti I’s, one of the longest and most richly decorated, and the dearest at EGP 2,000. The best tombs in the Valley of the Kings says what each one is like.
Over the West Bank at dawn
Balloon flights launch from the West Bank at sunrise and drift over the fields, the temples and the edge of the hills, weather permitting; they are cancelled at short notice when the wind is wrong. Sunrise Ballooning’s flight is from $88 a person in current promotion (usually $110), rated 4.8 from 1,894 reviews (checked October 2026). Valley of the Kings hot air balloon explains what you see from the basket, and is the Valley of the Kings worth visiting? weighs the long day from the coast.

Valley of the Kings FAQ
The questions people ask before a Valley of the Kings tour, answered in the first sentence and explained in the ones after.
EGP 750 for a foreign adult and EGP 375 for a foreign student, with three of the tombs open that day; Tutankhamun's tomb is EGP 700 more, Ramesses V and VI's EGP 220 and Seti I's EGP 2,000. Those are the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities' prices, read in October 2026. Many tours include the tickets, while the cheapest Luxor half days leave them to you at the gate. Valley of the Kings tickets lists every West Bank ticket and the Luxor Pass.
Yes, on a day trip: pickup between about 3:30 and 6 am, 4 to 4.5 hours each way to Luxor, and the valley, Hatshepsut's temple, the Colossi of Memnon and Karnak in between. We measured the road at 289 km. Most Hurghada day trips include the entry tickets, and some include Tutankhamun's tomb. Valley of the Kings from Hurghada compares them.
From Luxor, about five hours for a West Bank half day with lunch, and eight for both banks; from Hurghada, 14 hours or more. The tours give the valley itself about two hours, enough for three tombs; add about 20 minutes for each extra tomb such as Tutankhamun's. Valley of the Kings tours from Luxor sets the half and full days side by side.
Seti I's (KV17) for the decoration, Ramesses V and VI's (KV9) for its painted corridors and ceilings at EGP 220, and Tutankhamun's (KV62) for its story. The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities describes Seti I's as one of the longest, deepest and most beautifully decorated, and Tutankhamun's as modest in size and decoration. The best tombs in the Valley of the Kings compares them.
Yes, for the painted royal tombs deep in the hills, as long as you know the standard ticket opens three tombs and the finest cost extra. From a Luxor hotel it is an easy morning; from the Red Sea it is a long day on the road for about two hours in the valley. Is the Valley of the Kings worth visiting? weighs it up.
Not always: Luxor's balloons fly about 30 minutes over the West Bank fields, the Colossi of Memnon and the temples at the foot of the hills, and the valley lies behind the ridge. Guests on the flight sold as over the valley wrote that it went over the fields and temples instead. The flights are weather-dependent and launch at sunrise. Valley of the Kings hot air balloon compares the flights.
Every day from 06:00 to 17:00, like the other West Bank sites. That is the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities' timetable, read in October 2026. Tours from Luxor start early in the morning; the day trips from Hurghada reach the valley in the late morning or the afternoon, by the order of their stops.
Photography for personal use, with phones and ordinary cameras, is free and needs no permit, by a decision of Egypt's Cabinet announced by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. Professional equipment such as lighting needs a permit.
