How long in the valley
The tours give the valley about two hours, which is enough for three tombs and the walk between them; guests on the half day wrote of about an hour there on a busy day. Hatshepsut’s temple takes about an hour and the Colossi of Memnon a short stop by the road. If you want Tutankhamun’s tomb or Ramesses V and VI’s as well, add 20 minutes or so for each, and buy the ticket before you queue.

Getting there on your own
The valley is on the West Bank, Luxor’s centre on the East. Cross on the local ferry and take a taxi from the West Bank landing, or drive over the road bridge south of the city; agree the taxi’s waiting time and price for the whole round before you set off. The valley opens at 06:00 every day, with last entry at 17:00 in summer and 16:00 in winter and Ramadan (egymonuments.com). Valley of the Kings tickets lists every price.
